| Teens will find this book a useful guide to starting a relationship, deciding one's vocation, one day finding a potential spouse, and maintaining purity - without forsaking love. This book will give parents and educators new insights to help teens know the difference between love and lust. They may even look at their own lives differently, because as Evert explains, chastity is not only for singles; married couples must practice this virtue as well. "If You Really Loved Me" gives readers straight answers to tough questions. Addressing the relationship issues that today's young people face, Evert explains the often-misconstrued virtue of chastity - not as a rejection of human sexuality, but as an affirmation of authentic love. | |||

| Why Do Catholics Do That? by Kevin Orlin Johnson assumes nothing and tells all. As such, it's not only an ideal catechism companion but also a source of infinite wisdom for students of art history, politics, literature, philosophy, and pretty much any other subject connected with Catholic history. In a voice refreshingly free of condescension (and full of humor, witnessed in chapter titles such as "Saints: How You Get To Be One"), Johnson defines and expatiates upon hundreds of topics, including the Mass, the rosary, the cross, the eucharist, and the pope. | Some of you may wonder where I get the content of some of my homilies. Much of the way that I approach faith has been influenced by the thought of a German theologian by the name of Karl Rahner. Rahner has been the most influential Catholic theologian in this century. His writings helped to prepare the way for Vatican II and did much to shape the Church in the post-conciliar period. In this book, a former student of Rahner and fellow Jesuit interweaves passages from Rahner's writings. This book offers a clear and easy overall synopsis of Rahner's theology. It is an excellent first text for a newcomer to Rahner, before delving into his works which can be obscure. Level of Difficulty: Medium. -Fr. Mario | |||

| The life of Christ helps us to understand what is wrong with our world. In this book, Rene Girard, a Catholic Stanford University professor, helps us to understand the sickness that is loose in the world. Once you understand the scapegoating principle in the depths Girard presents, the Bible itself will take on a whole new meaning. Please understand this is not a Bible commentary, it is an anthropological study. Girard shows us a very ugly side of human nature. We are natural born scapegoaters. It is our method of dealing with the negative facts of our reality. It is a dishonest and brutal method of psychological survival. The Bible, unlike other books, is written from the point of view of the scapegoat. Other books are written from societies' point of view-- the point of view of the champions and winners. Thus when Jesus submitted himself to the scapegoating process-- being completely innocent-- he unmasked satan. He unmasked the process. This is not easy reading, but it ranks in the top 10 books I have ever read. Level of Difficulty: Medium High. Fr. Mario |

| Unique and valuable reference for anyone, Catholic or not, who would like a systematic concept of the theology of social doctrine. While less useful to non-Catholic readers due to its extensive use and references to church documents, its cross references to scripture and general theological/practical content is unique in my experience. Although the publisher's remarks give the reading level as young adult, I would rate it just a notch higher. It is very readable, but has an extensive vocabularly that at times involves words and comments more common to ecclesiastical documents than general reading. |
